Silver Hawking Ring. Circa 16th-17th century CE. Lewis and Richardson Type C.i. Formed of a shield-shaped plate and circular loop. The face of the plate is engraved with the image of a greyhounds head erased, collared, facing left. Above are the letters 'LRR' engraved in Roman capitals. The loop is plain and uninscribed. Declared as potential treasure and recorded on the PAS database: ESS-EEFDDE.

The letters LRR suggest the most likely owner of the vervel was Lord Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, (May/June 1587 – 19 April 1658). Lord Rich, who was Lord Lieutenant of Essex 1625–1642, was an English naval officer, politician and peer who commanded the Parliamentarian navy during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. His Father, 3rd Baron Rich, was made Earl of Warwick in 1618, despite the fact that Warwick castle was held by the Greville family, and upon his death the title passed to his son in 1619. The Greyhound head engraved on the vervel appears to represent the Greville family crest and possibly speaks of the association with Warwick castle.
